About the James McManus Fund
Dr. James H. McManus was a prominent Connecticut dentist during the latter part of the 19th century. Born in Hartford in 1836, he apprenticed with Dr. Hiram Preston, and graduated from the Philadelphia Dental School in 1865. Dr. McManus was one of the founders of the Hartford Dental Society and the Connecticut State Dental Association. He was elected President of the CSDA for two separate terms and served as a Vice President of the American Dental Association.
Following his death in 1920, a bequest of $10,000 was received by the Hartford Dental Society from the will of his second wife, Ella Burr McManus memorializing her husband, Dr. James McManus. These funds were placed in a separate trust administered by three Society members designated as Trustees. In 1963, the Fund was officially designated as a private tax exempt organization and incorporated as the James McManus Fund of the Hartford Dental Society Inc. In 1972, fund was changed to a public charitable foundation under section 509(a)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code.
Today, the foundation carries out it’s mission by providing grant money to qualified applicants.
